Stitch Fix - How It Worked For Me

For quite a while now, I have been intrigued with the company Stitch Fix. I have seen other bloggers post about the service and from what I knew, it sounded pretty dreamy. If you are unfamiliar with it, Stitch Fix is a company that employs personal stylists to work with and shop for you. After you fill out an initial style survey, your stylist will send you a box of clothing and accessories that should fit your size, your style, and hopefully your budget. This service is definitely ideal for busy women who don't have time to shop and also want style help.

When Stitch Fix contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I was interested in trying out a 'fix', I was interested but hesitant. I love to shop and styling myself is my hobby, so I wasn't sure I was interested in hiring someone else to style me. But the more I thought about it, I decided to give it a go. I genuinely wanted to try it to see if they could match my personal style and to find out if it was a service I could recommend to you. Plus who doesn't love getting a box full of clothes in the mail to try on?!? While Stitch Fix did send me a coupon code to waive the styling fee, they did not sponsor this post or give me any of the clothing that was sent.

At first I was skeptical that anyone could match my style, but after taking the initial survey I definitely felt more confident. As you sign up, you take a pretty intense questionnaire that asks you everything from how you like your shirts and pants to fit to what kind of clothes you wear most often to giving feedback on outfits they have compiled. It also asks what kind of clothing you would like your stylist to focus the most on and how much you like to spend on specific articles of clothing or accessories. I said I liked my tops to fit loose and my bottoms to fit slim. I also spend as little as possible on all clothing types and wanted the stylist to focus on casual wear - not skirts or office attire.

After the survey, I scheduled my 'fix' and waited. My box came two days early, which was fun, and I was excited to open it. I wasn't initially over the moon about it, but I was happy with it and the items grew on me as I examined them. I was sent three tops, a pair of jeans, and a handbag. I felt like the items all went together well and also fit my style. One of the tops and the bag surprised me, but I felt like maybe they would push me out of my comfort zone in a good way. Included in the box was a note from my stylist and two suggested ways to style each item (see above). I've styled all of the items below and honestly seeing myself in the clothing in photos was helpful in deciding what to keep or send back.

After trying all of the items on I decided to only keep one item, the gray and orange tribal print sweater. I wanted to love the jeans but they just weren't flattering enough for the price. The handbag didn't fit my lifestyle, although I loved it, and the other two tops weren't me enough to hold onto. All of the items were more expensive than I normally spend, but I realize that Stitch Fix can't compete with thrifting. :)

After deciding what to keep, I headed back to Stitch Fix's website to pay for the item, give the stylist feedback about the items, and schedule my next fix. When you sign up for Stitch Fix, you pay an up-front $20 styling fee, but you get to put that toward any items that you decide to keep. If you keep none of the items, then you lose it. Also included in the box is a prepaid envelope to ship the other items back. It was so easy to slip the rejects back in the envelope and send them back!

I definitely thought there were a lot of good things about Stitch Fix. First, I loved how easy it was. Half of the battle with ordering online is returning things, and Stitch Fix made the returning part almost irrelevant. Also, my stylist really did a good job of picking out clothes that looked good on me and that I could easily wear. I loved the variety of what came, and it was fun to try on new clothes at home rather than dragging my kids with me to the store or trying to escape while my hubby is home. It was hard not to keep it all just because I already had them in hand at home and I was ready to wear my new things!

The only complaints that I have (which aren't really complaints) are the cost and that I think I could have found things myself that I loved more. I have heard from several people that it takes a few boxes before your stylist really hones in on what you love and what works on you so I may try again. Plus I admit that styling myself is kind of my job and I doubt anyone could do it better than me. I realize that most people aren't that way!

I think if it fits in your budget, Stitch Fix is a great service to try out. If you need styling help, this is a great way to hire a personal stylist and get clothing in your closet that is good quality, fits you, and matches your style. Especially if you don't have time to find or figure those things out on your own time!
