Rush Crush- Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Update

Hey guys! It's been a minute since I last shared a Rush update and that's mostly because things have been going great! He has been growing like crazy and trying too hard to be one of the big boys. He continues to be such a joy to have around and to take care of. His cleft lip and his cleft palate have been almost non-issues since his surgery in August and I'm so thankful for that.

Rush is 9.5 months old now and like I said, he is ready to go! He has been walking along walls for several weeks now and often lets go to balance. He continues to try to take steps but doesn't make it far unassisted. His bravery is very impressive though and he has the bruises to show for it. He is always bumping his little head or face on something. I think we are close though! He's so close to walking.
That being said, crawling isn't going quite so well. ;) He's ready to walk and doesn't waste a lot of time crawling. I do think he is getting better and better at it though and might finally master it at the same time he learns to walk. I know it's a bittersweet thing though because the more he moves the harder he will be to keep track of! He's already pulling things out and off and open.
As far as food goes, he's still drinking a whole lot of formula. We've tried lots of other things and he is slowly eating more and more. He loves oatmeal, graham crackers, apples, Cheerios and baby puffs. He also loves cookies! He does still have a hole in the roof of his mouth so a lot of what he eats ends up being sneezed out! We tried mashed potatoes a few weeks ago and he spent the next hour sneezing them out! It was kinda sad and pretty funny.
Sleeping through the night. Not happening yet. Don't ask.
Last week I took Rush to his nine month check-up and he passed with flying colors. He weighed 21.5 pounds and hit the 85% percentile for weight. Height was 55th percentile and his head was in the 95th percentile! He's not a small guy anymore!
Next week we have an appointment at the hospital to check in with our cleft doctors. We should get some news about his next surgery and next steps. I am expecting his surgery will be scheduled for next February or March and we'll find out more about how to prepare for that soon.
I want to say thank you for all the love for Rush and our family. He is such a special guy and I'm so glad to share him and his story with you. We're so lucky to have so many people cheering him and us on. So, thank you. It means so, so much.

  1. He’s so cute. My daughter had a bilateral cleft lip and palate. She could stick her finger in her mouth and out her nose. If I can find the pic I will post it
